Eason Liu, who has a childlike smile, and the simple-minded Becky Zheng, always dreamed of entrepreneurship. “We should choose our favorite thing to start up. As the boy loves dessert and the girl likes taro, taro balls became the centerpiece of their start-up business.
In the Yunlin Dounan Market, they started their own entrepreneurial road, while Eason Liu, who still works in a Japanese company, came to the vendor to help after they got off from the graveyard shift. Becky Zheng took a small window to send DM along the road, and sometimes even NT500 a day turnover could not be reached in the early days. However, they couldn’t give up. Although they have already researched and modified many times, the business has not improved. ‘It must be our Taro Balls not delicious enough.’’ Eason Liu and Becky Zheng recall eating the taro balls handmade by a grandma vendor in Jiufen old street. The taste of Taro Balls was unforgettable, so they decided to meet grandma. Moreover, they learned the recipe for making the Taro Balls.
Finally, they received the technique from the grandma vendor, but two questions were still in Eason Liu’s heart. The questions were how to make the Taro Balls stay chewy in the ice desserts and how to make the Taro Balls like bubble tea in a cup for casual consumption.
Those questions take many years to be resolved by adjusting the receipt to let Taro Balls in ice desserts at least stay chewy for 30 minutes; by reforming the Taro Balls in the size of pearls and letting the customers who like Taro Balls eat the handmade Taro Balls freely and easily, even the technique of making mini purple sweet potato has received a patent.
During the challenging start-up period of their entrepreneurship, Eason Liu and Becky Zheng became a married couple and the best partners in entrepreneurship.
After more than ten years of hard work, the couple finally obtained a sweet results. The Taro Yuan franchise store had increased by 30 branches in 2019. Although the COVID-19 pandemic was getting severe, it had become the dark horse for franchise chains in Taiwan. Our shops exceeded 140 places in a year, growing Fastest in Taiwan’s 2020 Beverages and Desserts Showcases.
More than 800 tons of taro have been used yearly, and more than 500 million Taro Balls are sold. This number is still growing daily and is close to the number of planets in the Milky Way. This is the challenging journey to fulfill a purple dream, from a market cart to selling as many taros as the stars in the Milky Way.
From now on, if Eason Liu felt stressed and tired, he still used to eat dessert. While eating, he has a pure smile and always makes people feel like he is still a big boy.
